Chicken processor Mountaire Farms recently purchased the Cartanza Grain Facility in Dover, DE, enabling the firm to source more grain from producers in Kent and New Castle counties, a recent company press release announced. Opened in 1977 by the Cartanza family, the Little Creek Road storage facility can currently hold over 1 million grain bushels and contains a grain dryer.

“We are grateful to the Cartanza family for allowing us to continue the legacy they’ve built,” Adam Downes, the leader of Mountaire Farms’ Agri-Business department said in a statement. “Buying local grain is important to us and maintaining those relationships that they have established through the years is going to be our number one goal.”

The newly-acquired Dover facility is one of six grain storage facilities owned by the firm in Delaware. Mountaire Farms also owns two grain storage sites in Virginia and five in Maryland.

“With the majority of the grain produced by Delaware’s farmers feeding Delmarva’s poultry, I am pleased to see Mountaire’s commitment to family farmers throughout our entire state,” said Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Michael T. Scuse in the company’s release. “Cartanza Grain Storage has been a long-standing family agribusiness and it’s important to farmers that they are able to do business locally. By acquiring this facility, Mountaire is ensuring that farmers will continue to have local options when selling their grain.”

Mountaire Farms is the sixth largest chicken processor in the U.S.
