LyondellBasell JV to Construct New Polypropylene Plant

A joint venture by PolyMirae Company Ltd. and SK Advanced plans to construct a new polypropylene manufacturing plant in Ulsan, South Korea that will feature a capacity of 400,000 tn/yr., a LyondellBasell press release announced Monday.

Plastics, chemicals, and refining company LyondellBasell owns 50% of PolyMirae, with the remaining shares owned by South Korean construction and petrochemical firm Daelim. SK Advanced is a joint venture established by Advanced Petrochemical Company, Petrochemical Industries Company, and SK Gas.

“With the addition of this joint venture’s capacity, PolyMirae will ensure that automotive manufacturers in South Korea and throughout Asia will continue to be able to locally source the polypropylene they need to advance the next generation of fuel efficient vehicles,” LyondellBasell Vice President of Joint Ventures and International Marketing James Seward said in a statement, continuing, “and that LyondellBasell will gain access to additional export volumes to ensure our global production footprint will continue to grow alongside our customer base.

The companies intend to start construction of the facility in January 2019. Operations at the Ulsan plant are slated to commence in 2021. Manufacturing firms in Asia will use polypropylene made at the site for a variety of end uses.

“We are going to use the additional polypropylene volume produced by the joint venture to further support and expand our customer portfolio in the automotive, packaging, textile, and consumer segments,” Martino Gabellich, chief executive officer of PolyMirae, said in a company release.
