South Korean-owned firm Lotte Chemical recently commenced operations at its new ethylene glycol (EG) production unit at the company’s Lake Charles, LA plant, company officials told several news organizations.

The new unit, part of a $3.1 billion investment project, will have a capacity of 700,000 tn/yr of ethylene glycol, coverage by New Orleans City Business said. A joint venture between Lotte Chemical and Westlake Chemical, LACC LLC, also plans to construct a new ethane cracker at the site, which is slated to start up in the first quarter of this year.

Lotte’s ethylene glycol unit became operational on January 20 this year, Jim Rock, project site executive director, told the Lake Charles American Press. Products produced in the new facility were shipped three days after starting up.

About 250 new jobs will be generated through the opening of the ethane cracker and ethylene glycol production unit.

Rock told the American Press that the company intends to hold an event marking the start of operations this May.
