Hopper Fire at Cargill Animal Feed Facility

November 18, 2019

Crews responded to a Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health facility in Temple, TX on Friday night after a fire ignited in a material hopper at the site, local news organizations reported. 15 workers were forced to evacuate the plant during the incident.

Local firefighters were called to the Berger Road facility at about 5:20 p.m. and arrived at the scene to find smoke coming from the hopper, ABC News affiliate KXXV said in coverage. Several media reports indicated that a silo was also involved in the fire.

Earlier this month, the agribusiness announced the completion of a $34 million expansion project at the Temple feed plant. Cargill added 70,000 sq ft of space to the facility and increased its capacity.

Work on the Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health facility commenced in January 2018. During the construction, space was created for additional manufacturing, packaging, warehousing, and shipping assets. Cargill said the expansion will lower transportation costs for area ranch feed store owners and beef feed customers and bolster the Temple site’s manufacturing capabilities.

The Temple site has a capacity of 500,000 tn/yr of bag and bulk animal feed.
