Hi-Crush to Cut 35 Jobs at Wisconsin Frac Sand Facility

August 13, 2019

Proppant and logistics services firm Hi-Crush plans to cut 40 jobs at its frac sand production facility in Whitehall, WI as the company idles activities at the site amid poor market conditions, the company wrote in an August 6 letter to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. It is currently unclear if the company’s decision to pause operations and reduce its workforce will be temporary or permanent.

“The layoff is necessitated by unforeseeable business circumstances associated with decreased profitability in shipping sand from our CN plants and the company’s responsibilities to its shareholders to operate cost effectively,” the company’s letter said. “We are hopeful that the layoff is temporary but the duration is presently unknown.”

Hi-Crush said it does not expect the situation to improve in the “foreseeable future” and that the separations will be in effect “through at least the end of 2019.” 15 jobs will be cut on August 30 and another 20 to 25 workers will be laid off on September 6.

The Whitehall facility has a production capacity of 2.8 million tn/yr of 20/100 frac sand and features an onsite rail yard, according to information on the company’s website.
