A slump in sales of paper for printing and writing is leading paper products maker Georgia-Pacific to close its communications paper business this spring, a company press release announced Thursday. Along with the plan to shutter the unit, the firm also plans to close a related production facility in Port Hudson, LA, impacting some 650 jobs there.

Machines used to produce printing and writing paper, converting assets, a wood yard, a pulp mill, and part of an energy complex will be shut down in March at the Port Hudson site as part of the effort. In addition to the hundreds of production jobs that will be cut, 40 jobs in business and sales will also be lost.

“The employees in our printing and writing papers business have worked diligently to support the business, and in recent years we have invested significantly in our operations. We have ultimately decided that the required investment to sustain the operation long-term, coupled with the declining market, is not viable,” Mike Adams, president of GP PRO and Communications Papers, said in a statement.

Georgia-Pacific intends to continue running its operations for premium tissue and towel products at the Port Hudson facility, retaining about 300 workers. Other employees impacted by the job cuts may be offered positions at other company sites.
