Forklift Eyed as Cause of Fire at Georgia-Pacific Plant

May 14, 2019

A forklift caught on fire and exploded Monday evening at the Georgia-Pacific mill in Muskogee, OK, leaving several workers with minor injuries, local news organizations reported. Operations at the facility were halted after the fire was out as crews examined damage.

“There was a propane-powered forklift that caught on fire, and they tried to extinguish it by hand and were unable to,” Muskogee Fire Department Chief Mike O’Dell toldtelevision news station KFSM. “They determined it was getting out of control, and they left, and it exploded.”

The blaze reportedly started at about 9:40 p.m. Two structures at the plant – one used for storage and another containing paper converting assets – collapsed during the fire. About 65 workers were present in the area of the plant where the fire broke out.

“All employees and contractors were evacuated safely from the area and are accounted for. We don’t yet know the extent of the damage or the cause of the fire,” Georgia-Pacific said in a statement publishedby Fox News affiliate KFOR.

A person suffering from smoke inhalation was brought to an area hospital, the Muskogee Fire Department said in a Facebook post. Four others were treated at the plant.

The Georgia-Pacific plant in Muskogee produces tissue products, according to information on the company’s website.
