Crews from several fire departments responded to a fire at the Maine Woods Pellet Co. pellet plant in Athens, ME early Friday morning after dust ignited at the site, several local news organizations reported.

A spark in a dust control system at the plant ignited a fire in dust collection bags at about 2:30 a.m., Athens Fire Chief Brett Strout told the Bangor Daily News. The official said crews were able to contain the fire and that flames did not spread to the facility’s baghouse.

“It was just some dust that caught fire,” an owner of the plant, Robert Linkletter, said in an interview with the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinelshortly after the incident. “No real damage in the bag house. We should be up and running soon.”

Reports did not mention whether any injuries occurred during the fire or not. Crews cleared the scene at about 4:30 a.m.

The 55-acre site in Athens can produce about 100,000 tn/yr of wood pellets, which are used by energy firms to generate clean, renewable power, according to Main Woods Pellet’s website.
