Fire Breaks Out at LafargeHolcim Cement Plant

August 19, 2019

Crews from several area fire departments responded to the LafargeHolcim cement plant in Ravena, NY after a fire ignited in a conveyor belt at the site on Friday, local news organizations reported.

Town of Coeymans Fire Chief Mark Deyo told the Albany Times-Union that a mechanical issue may have caused the fire to ignite in the conveying system, which transports material from a nearby wharf to the facility.

Firefighters worked to douse the flames and expel smoke from the facility for several hours, coverage by television news station WNYT said.

Opened in 1962, the Lafarge plant in Ravena has a capacity of 2.2 million mt/yr of cement, information on the company’s website said. 130 workers are employed at the site.
