Equipment Fire Doused at Cargill Chocolate Plant

September 17, 2019

Firefighters responded to the Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate plant in Milwaukee, WI on Monday morning after a fire ignited inside of a roasting area in the facility, several local news organizations reported.

The emergency personnel were called to the Carmen Avenue site at about 9:30 a.m., according to coverage by television news station WTMJ.

Officials told Fox News affiliate WITI that the blaze was in a piece of roasting equipment and that the facility was not seriously damaged. Crews used a dry chemical to put out the flames.

Cargill’s Milwaukee facility is one of four plants operated by the firm’s Cocoa & Chocolate business, information on the company’s website said.

The Wisconsin site was acquired by Cargill during its 2015 purchase of Archer Daniels Midland’s (ADM) global chocolate business, a 2017 report on the plant by news website OnMilwaukee.com said. The plant manufactures millions of pounds of chocolate each month.

Crews were called to a Cargill protein facility in Dodge City, IA on Friday after a fire ignited inside of a ventilation system. One person was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.
