Eastman to Expand Capacity of Films Production Plant

January 13, 2020

Specialty materials firm Eastman Chemical Company revealed plans Friday for an expansion project at its Dresden, Germany films production plant. The company said it will add a new coating and laminating line at the facility to bolster the growth of its branded paint protection and window film products.

“The additional capacity will allow us to meet the continued strong growth we’re seeing in Europe and around the globe for our paint protection films as well as provide versatility to meet growing customer needs in high-value automotive and architectural window films,” the general manager of the firm’s Performance Films business, Erin Bernhardt, said in a company press release.

The company said the announcement of the Dresden project is one of several major investments it has made in paint protection films. Eastman has carried out several expansion projects at its Martinsville plant, opened the Performance Films Patterns and Software Center of Excellence, and debuted its Core pattern and business operations software.

Work on the facility in Germany is planned to reach completion in mid-2021.

In June 2019, Eastman said it is investing $70 million in an upgrade and modernization project and the construction of a new chemical intermediates production plant at its St. Gabriel, LA facility. The site is focused on the production of amines for producers of the food, personal care, agricultural and feed products.

The market for high performance films is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6% between 2019 and 2024, according to Mordor Intelligence. During the period, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to lead growth.
