Dust Collector Fire Damages Kentucky Furniture Plant

Fire departments from several counties responded to a fire at a Kentucky furniture production plant and retail store on Friday morning that left several structures with heavy damages, several local news organizations reported. 

Crews responded to Rocky Top Log Furniture & Railing in Lancaster, KY after the fire started at about 6:30 a.m., the Lexington Herald-Leader reported. The blaze reportedly started in a dust collection area in the plant’s “flat shop” and then flames moved into a nearby shipping area, according to coverage by local television news station WKYT. 

“Total devastation. We’ve lost an entire building – we’ve lost three buildings. Lot of firefighters out here, thank you everyone,” said Robert Matheny, a man who said he works at the facility, in a video he shot at the scene that was posted to Facebook. He added: “Firefighters salvaged some of our buildings, we can keep going. It’ll take some time.”

Laurence Coppedge, the owner of Rocky Top Log Furniture & Rolling, told the Danville Advocate-Messengerthat an explosion occurred a worker turned on a piece of equipment, sending a fireball through a door vent.  

An evacuation of workers was carried out during the fire. No injuries were reported during the incident.
