Crews Put Out Conveyor Fire at Sask. Grain Terminal

March 15, 2019

Firefighters worked for several hours last Monday evening to put out a fire in a grain drag conveyor at the Parrish & Heimbecker grain terminal in North Battleford, SK, local news organizations reported.

A report of the fire was received at about 6:10 p.m., prompting the response of dozens of first responders and several tanker trunks, news website BattlefordsNow.com said. Crews remained on scene for about three hours.

The blaze in the grain drag conveyor was likely ignited by an “overheated bearing” and fueled by grain chaff, fire officials said in coverage by the Battlefords News-Optimist

Fire personnel had to approach the blaze with caution as grain dust within the facility incident posed a risk of a dust explosion during the incident.

“We had to be cognizant of that fighting the fire and part of that process is wetting down the dust in the area to try to prevent something like that from happening,” North Battleford Deputy Fire Chief of Operations and Training Lindsay Holm told BattlefordsNow.com.

No injuries were reported during the fire.

Parrish & Heimbecker grain terminal in North Battleford features a capacity of 42,800 mt and a handling rate of 30,000 b/hr, according to information on the firm’s website.
