Fire crews were called to the Jennie-O feed mill in Barron, WI on Monday after a cooling tower caught on fire, Barron County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release posted to Facebook.

Personnel from the Barron Maple Grove Fire Department responded to the fire at about 7:30 a.m. Upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke coming from a portion of the structure and called for backup from several area fire departments.

“Firefighters made entry into the tower and initiated searches of each floor, resulting in no victims and all plant employees being accounted for,” the sheriff’s department said. “Due to the quick recognition and early notification of this fire by onside employees, emergency crews were able to contain the fire to the cooling tower without extending into adjacent structures.”

The fire started in a section of the facility used to heat grain, a fire official said in an interview with the Barron-News Shield.

“The cooling tower mixes heat with the feed, and then it’s stored in the elevator,” Barron Maple Grove Fire Chief Mike Romsos told the newspaper. “When we first got there, there were still workers inside. They said (the fire) happened so fast, but they got out on their own, and nobody had to be rescued.”

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
