Conveyor Fire Causes Shut Down at Coal Power Plant

April 19, 2017

A fire broke out Monday might on a coal conveyor belt in the coal handling unit of the Talwandi Sabo thermal plant in Patiala, India, causing the plant to suspend energy generation operations, several Indian news media organizations.

“A fire broke out in the conveyor belt area and nearly a 25m portion of the belt was damaged due to which the coal supply was disrupted. The plant had to be shut down,” the communications head of the plant, Vishal Aggarwal, told the Times of India. “The technical teams are assessing the cause of the fire and the losses. It may take 15 days to restart the plant.”

The fire at the Vendanta Inc. site ignited at about 11 p.m. A conveyor belt system transporting coal collapsed by the transfer junction tower, which may require a month to fix, an official told the Times.

Vandanta’s company fire brigade extinguished the fire, according to the Hindustan Times. The cause of the incident and the total cost of damages is unknown.

“The power plant officials controlled the fire, but the power production was shut. They are trying to restore power generation. There was no casualty in the incident,” a government official told the Hindustan Times.
