CertainTeed to Close Gypsum Wallboard Plant

January 24, 2020

Saint-Gobain-owned building materials manufacturer CertainTeed is moving to shutter its gypsum wallboard production plant in Cody, WY this April, impacting about 50 workers at the site, several local news organizations reported Wednesday.

The company notified its workforce of the facility’s impending closure last week. Operations are slated to come to a halt at the Cody plant on April 3, the Cody Enterprise said. Company officials told the newspaper that Saint-Gobain is working to sell the site and that mining operations will also be impacted by the firm’s decision.

“Our decision to close to the Cody Plant was not made lightly, but became necessary due to the small local volume around the plant and a consistent decline over the past few years in overall volumes, resulting in plant underutilization,” Kevin Murray, regional manufacturing manager at CertainTeed, wrote in a letter to employees that was printed by the Powell Tribune.

Saint-Gobain took possession of the facility during its 2005 acquisition of CertainTeed. The company build a new 18,000-sq-ft warehouse at the plant in 2014, according to coverage by the Enterprise.
