German firm BASF entered into a distribution agreement with Europe’s largest supplier of sunflower seeds, Euralis Semences, to launch a new portfolio of hybrid sunflower seeds across the European continent, a recent company press release announced. The new relationship marks BASF's entry into the region’s €1.3 billion sunflower market.

“Sunflower is a key crop for Europe. Due to its abundant health benefits, it plays a big role in modern diet. Sunflower is also critical for crop rotation. With this partnership, we further invest in our seeds and traits business to become an even stronger partner for our customers,” Livio Tedeschi, senior vice president for Europe, Middle East, Africa and CIS at BASF’s Agricultural Solutions division, said in a statement.

The aim of the distribution agreement is to develop a new pipeline of sunflower hybrids and gauge the market, according to the company. BASF’s range of sunflower seed products will include the firm’s Clearfield Plus technology.

Sunflower hybrids covered by the agreement are slated to be launched in 2020.
