Albemarle Starts Work on New Lithium Hydroxide Facility

January 3, 2019

Specialty chemicals maker Albemarle recently commenced earthworks at the site of its planned lithium hydroxide (LOH) conversion facility in the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area (KSIA) in Kemerton, Australia, the firm announced in a release Wednesday.

The move comes after the company received environmental approval for the site from Australian federal and state government.

“The site earthworks at Kemerton today are on track with our projections,” Eric Norris, president of Albemarle’s Lithium business, said in a statement. “Achieving this milestone underscores our commitment and confidence in developing LiOH operations in western Australia and in our overall strategy to drive significant shareholder value and meet our customers’ demands.”

Albemarle’s facility in Kemerton will have a capacity of 100,000 tn/yr of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (Lithium Hydroxide Product) from five 20,000 tpa process trains, according to information from the Government of Western Australia’s Environmental Protection Authority. The site will be capable of manufacturing 1,100,000 tpa of tailings.

Startup of the new plant is expected sometime during 2021.
