Health care products maker Abbott Laboratories is planning to invest $62 million in its Columbus, OH infant formula and adult nutrition products manufacturing plant to build a new structure and acquire new machinery and equipment, according to documents filed this month with the City of Columbus.

“With this expansion, the company proposes to replace its existing 2-ounce bottle manufacturing line with a new filling and sterilization system that would increase its line capacity from 157 to 250 million units per year, and address the risk of equipment failure of its existing soon-to-be obsolete 2-ounce line,” the company wrote in the filing.

The company said it intends to spend $49.6 million on equipment for the Abbott Nutrition plant. $11.7 million will go toward “real property improvements,” including construction of a 25,000-sq-ft building at the site. An additional $644,000 will be invested in stand-alone computers.

Abbott’s project is expected to add 38 new full-time jobs to the Columbus plant’s present headcount of 428. In connection with its investment, the company is seeking a 75% Enterprise Zone property tax abatement for a 10-year term.

Work on the new building and other upgrades to the plant are slated to begin this April, the document said. Completion of the project is expected by December.
