7000 Corn Bushels Damaged in Wisconsin Grain Bin Fire

February 12, 2018

A fire at a Little Black, WI farm on Feb. 1 damaged a corn bin and some left some 7000 bushels of corn unfit for sale, the Medford Star-News reported.

Crews from two fire departments responded to Feddick Farms after owners smelled burning material coming from the grain bin at about 4 p.m. and the site’s operators unsuccessfully attempted to stop the fire.

Workers at the facility ran an auger to move corn from the bottom of the bin and turned off fans, the newspaper’s coverage said. After operating the auger for several hours, the fans were powered, stoking the flames.

Crews managed to put down the fire but hot spots continued to flare up into Friday morning. Star-News said the cause of the incident is believed to be a heater that was burning at a greater temperature than normal. The heater was put into the grain bin the previous fall.

One hundred bushels of corn were destroyed in the fire, and 7000 bushels were damaged.
