Four workers at a corn processing plant in Clinton, IA operated by American agribusiness Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) have contracted COVID-19, the company confirmed to local news organizations on Monday. In response, ADM said it is taking steps to isolate the infected workers and improve the safety of its facility.

“Based on our COVID-19 health and safety protocols, we performed contact tracing and have asked all colleagues who work in close proximity to these individuals to self-quarantine at home,” ADM Spokesperson Jackie Anderson told television news station KWQC. “We have revisited all health and safety guidelines with our Clinton workforce and have provided additional guidance, and we are taking other precautionary measures including deep cleaning at the facility to avoid additional spread.”

The four infected staff members are currently quarantining and are getting medical treatment, according to a Clinton Herald report.

“Right now, we are able to continue operations at the plant with some staffing adjustments,” Anderson said in a statement to Reuters. “We are continuing to closely monitor the situation and are communicating with employees and local health authorities as things evolve.”

In January 2019, 33-year-old Clinton Fire Lt. Eric Hosette died and a 23-year-old firefighter received injuries in while battling a fire and explosion in a silo at the Clinton corn processing plant.
