Mineral-based specialty solutions supplier Imerys commenced commercial sales from its new calcium aluminate plant in India. Located in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), the €40 million (about $47.7 million) facility enables the firm to increase its foothold in the country, the company announced in a recent release.

The facility will produce SECAR 70V, a calcium aluminate binder with controlled chemistry and optimized mineralogy for conventional castable applications, and SECAR 68V, a calcium aluminate binder used in low cement castables. Used in the Indian refractory and construction industries, both products are formulated to withstand the climate of the sub-continent.

“The opening of this new plant is a major milestone for Imerys. It is another proof that the group continues to invest in growing markets and geographies. The fully remote commissioning caused by the perduring pandemic, has been an incredible achievement,” Imerys Chief Executive Officer Alessandro Dazza said in a statement. “Our local teams have been simply great.”

In addition to its production assets, the site will also become a distribution center for imported ready-to-use mortars and bentonite products for the infrastructure applications like wastewater and tunneling.

Imerys currently operates 16 industrial sites in India.
