Jenike to Present at Powder & Bulk Solids Texas

Jenike & Johanson will present four separate sessions at Powder & Bulk Solids Texas, October 14-16 at the Reliant Center in Houston.

Here is the schedule of Jenike’s presentations:

Monday, October 14

9am to 12pm
Fundamentals of Powder Flow Technology

This session will discuss the cause of common flow problems that arise when powders and bulk solids are put into silos, hoppers, and feeders. A fundamental understanding of powder handling technology is essential to solving costly material handling problems.

This session will cover the following key topics:

Common flow problems (e.g., arching, ratholing, flooding, segregation)
Flow patterns (funnel and mass flow) through storage equipment
Measuring vital bulk solids flow properties
Review of powder test equipment
Interpretation of common test results

Eric Maynard, director of education/senior consultant, Jenike & Johanson Inc.

1pm to 4pm
Material Handling and Storage

With the knowledge of material properties, proper design of storage, handling, and feeding equipment can be made. This session will review an example flow properties test report with consideration to applying the results to silo and feeder design. This session will also cover a step-by-step storage vessel design technique, which has been effectively used for more than 60 years.

This session will cover the following key topics:

Understanding an example powder flow test report
Step-by-step design process for a storage vessel and feeder

Dr. Andrés Orlando, project engineer, Jenike & Johanson Inc.

1pm to 4pm
Troubleshooting Common Pneumatic Conveying Problems

Problems such as pipeline wear, particle degradation (i.e., fines generation), reduced throughput, and plugging frequently occur during pneumatic transport of many bulk solids. These issues negatively affect system efficiency and create costly bottlenecks and possibly safety hazards. By understanding the fundamental causes of these problems through effective troubleshooting, practical solutions can be realized and effectively implemented.

This session will cover the following key topics:

Types of problems (wear, fines generation, plugging, rate limits)
Causes of problems
Troubleshooting techniques
Solutions to pneumatic conveying problems

Eric Maynard, director of education/senior consultant, Jenike & Johanson Inc.

Tuesday, October 15

9am to 12pm
Understanding Mixing, Blending, Sampling, and Segregation of Bulk Solids

Obtaining a uniform mixture or blend can be challenging with dry powders, especially if cohesive. Many blending options are available, and selecting the correct equipment will ensure efficient mixing operations. This session will provide the fundamental information for mixing and blending practices, as well as coverage of effective sampling practices. Additionally, coverage of post-mix handling to avoid segregation will be presented to ensure maintenance of a uniform product through the process.

This session will cover the following key topics:

Types of mixers and blenders
Mixing mechanisms
Key sampling practices
Mechanisms of segregation
Solutions to segregation problems

Eric Maynard, director of education/senior consultant, Jenike & Johanson Inc.

Wednesday, October 16

10:15am to 10:45am
Tech Theater Presentation – Structural Engineering of Bulk Solids Structures

Dr. Andrés Orlando, project engineer, Jenike & Johanson Inc.
