Randy Smith, VP technical services, General Kinematics, has been selected to receive the illustrious ‘Outstanding Alumnus Award’ in recognition of contributions to his profession and community from the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture from his alma mater, University Of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Immediately after graduating from UW Platteville with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology, Smith started working at General Kinematics in 1980 as an engineering draftsman. Through the 80s and 90s, he moved through the ranks of engineering and field service positions, and went on to obtain his MBA. In 1998, he was promoted to director of operations – engineering, manufacturing & service, until he was promoted yet again to VP technical services/component sales in 2003. In 2011, he officially became the VP of technical services with responsibilities focused in strategic global initiatives.
“The Industrial Technology program at the University of Wisconsin Platteville historically has provided a unique emphasis in its curriculums for hands-on technology, communication skills, and business practices,” said Smith. “Today, the Department of Industrial Studies at the University of Wisconsin Platteville is uniquely set up to develop students into graduates that are willing and very well-equipped to meet the challenges of the manufacturing sectors on a global basis. The educational staff at UW Platteville is dedicated to fostering a hands-on learning environment in well-equipped physical laboratories, as well as an academic exploration in the classroom. The student-to-teacher ratio allows for a close educational experience with instructional staff. Coupled together, these elements are conducive to fostering a valuable educational experience for students.”
Smith will be honored at the official awards reception in Platteville as part of the UWP homecoming activities on Friday, October 4, 2013.
