Floating Rail Bridge Saves Companies Money, Time

CG Railway Inc., located in Mobile, AL, operates the only rail vessel service in the U.S. market providing an alternate transportation mode between the U.S. and southern Mexico.

Every four days, CG Railway provides a safe, fast, and eco-friendly rail-ferry service transporting all types of rail cars to and from Mobile and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. CG Railway’s direct service provides competitive rates with fast, reliable transit. The faster transit secures additional savings to the supply chain through optimum equipment utilization and lower inventory carry cost.

Each of CG Railway’s two rail ferries have the capacity to carry 115 standard rail cars and travels only 900 miles by sea as opposed to 1400 miles via the traditional Mexican–U.S. border crossings.

“The improved transit times have multiple benefits for businesses,” said Kevin Wild, senior vice president of CG Railway.  “In the past, larger companies would carry around 30 days worth of inventory due to prolonged travel times. With our quick, reliable transit, these same companies can set their supply chain and inventory levels as needed coming the closest to just-in-time and continuous supply chain offered with rail.”

With the competitive costs and efficient supply chain logistics, companies using the CG Railway rail-ferry service have a new opportunity to increase their market reach by entering U.S. and southern Mexico markets that they couldn’t before due to the long transit times via the traditional land crossings.

"The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) has worked with CG Railway since their inception,” said Smitty Thorne, executive vice president & COO of the ASPA. “CGR's operational staff, our port staff, and our railroad operations people work very closely together to insure the best possible operation and turnaround time for the vessels. It's a smooth team effort that insures our mutual customers get the service they deserve."

CG Railway Inc. is a subsidiary of International Shipholding Corp. and a member of the Association of American Railroads. It was established in 2000 as a short line railroad to provide faster, more cost-effective means of transportation between southern Mexico and the railways of the U.S. and Canada. As a result of NAFTA, larger cargo volumes traveling between U.S. and Mexico mean delays in rail transportation and road traffic. CG Railway offers quick transport from areas east of the Mississippi River to southern Mexico’s industrial areas. CG Railway Inc. is a CTPAT approved carrier.
