AAR Senior Vice President John Gray Named to Special U.S. DOT Transportation Statistics Council

Association of American Railroads senior vice president, policy and economics John T. Gray has been appointed by U.S. Transportation secretary Ray LaHood to the Advisory Council on Transportation Statistics (ACTS). ACTS was established by the Transportation Efficiency Act for the 21st Century to provide external advice to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics on transportation statistical matters.

“This is a tremendous honor, for not only AAR but also for the railroad industry. John has deep knowledge and expertise in transportation statistics and economics, and will well represent the railroad industry perspective on the council,” said Edward R. Hamberger, president and CEO of the Association of American Railroads.

Gray has a long career in railroading, and has held executive positions with Union Pacific, Burlington Northern, and Alaska railroads. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering from Tulane University and has completed post graduate work in mathematical modeling of transportation networks at Northwestern University.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) is the world's leading railroad policy, research, and technology organization focusing on the safety and productivity of rail carriers. AAR members include the major freight railroads, or Class I railroads, of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, as well as Amtrak. Class I railroads represent 67 percent of the U.S. freight rail mileage and 90 percent of freight railroad industry employees. Railroads account for 43 percent of intercity freight volume — more than any other mode of transportation. Historic weekly and monthly rail statistics are available at www.aar.org.
