Ingredient solutions firm CP Kelco plans to expand capacity of gellan gum at its Okmulgee, OK biogums production plant amid an uptick in global demand for the product, a recent company press release announced.

“Always mindful of our customers’ needs and quickly evolving market and consumer trends, we continue to anticipate an increased focus on naturally derived, clean-label ingredients, now and in the future,” Jérôme Béra, senior vice president of global marketing at CP Kelco, said in a statement. “With the additional gellan gum capacity in our Okmulgee plant, we can better work with our customers to develop innovative foods, beverages, and other products for consumers.”

Produced through a fermentation process, gellan gum is used by food and beverage and personal care products manufacturers for stabilization, suspension, and texture applications.

“Our continued investment in our biogums plants, along with our focus on sustainability and safety, ensures that we meet our customers’ expectations for supply, quality, and innovation,” said Thomas Lauresn, senior vice president of operations, in the release. “Along with the gellan gum expansion project kicked off at our Wulian, China plant in July, the Okmulgee product strongly positions CP Kelco with multiple supply points to support customers in every region globally.”

Gellan gum was invented by CP Kelco in 1978.
