American food firm Conagra Brands Inc. plans to open a new 40,000-sq-ft facility in Chicago that will expand research and development and culinary capabilities for its snacking business.

“Conagra Brands’ $2 billion snacks business is one of the largest and fastest growing in the food industry,” Tom McGough, executive vice president and co-chief operating officer of Conagra Brands said in a Sept. 4 company press release. “Our strong snacking portfolio is positioned for long-term growth and we expect the capabilities in this new facility will enable us to create even more innovative products that our consumers love.”

Slated to open in the first quarter of 2020, the Conagra Brands Center for Food Design will house up to 50 staff members, including food and packaging designers and culinary team members.

“The Conagra Brands Center for Food Design will be a fresh, collaborative space with state-of-the-art capabilities to provide our talented team with the right resources to help grow Conagra’s snacking business,” Corey Berends, senior vice president of research & development at Conagra, said in a statement. “In addition, the expansive kitchen and tasting area will be an ideal place to collaborate with our customers and develop new food solutions.”

The new center will be located next to the company’s existing site, The Merchandise Mart. Conagra also operates The Center for Food Design and Technology in Omaha, NE, which focuses on frozen, refrigerated, shelf-stable meals, condiments, and enhancers.
