API manufacturer Cambrex Corporation recently completed a $3 million expansion project at its Milan, Italy plant to add a new research and development laboratory and install a new 12,000-liter reactor in a cGMP production building at the site, the company announced in a release Thursday.

“This investment is part of our ongoing strategy to ensure that the site can adapt to the growing and evolving needs of the generic API industry,” Aldo Magnini, managing director of Cambrex Milan, said in a statement. “Investing in key technologies such as continuous flow will allow us to look at new opportunities for the site to expand our portfolio of generic products.”

Cambrex’s new R&D laboratory features technologies for both chemistry and analytical development, including semi-automated glass lined reactors, high and ultra-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography systems, and a variety of other analytical instruments. A flow chemistry system was also installed to enable the firm to develop continuous manufacturing processes. The 12,000-liter reactor was added in one of the site’s production buildings, along with new equipment to replace centrifuges.

The Milan plant manufactures more than 70 generic APIs according to cGMP standards across production departments. A pilot plant, kilo-scale plant, and development and analytical laboratories are also located at the site.
