Micromeritics Scientists to Speak at University of Maryland

Micromeritics scientists, Myke Scoggins and John Elter, are participating as speakers at the Tablets and Capsules Hands-On Short Course, presented by the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore, October 20–25, 2013.

Dr. Scoggins, pharmaceutical scientist and acting lab manager of Micromeritics Analytical Services and Micromeritics Pharmaceutical Services, has more than 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including analytical chemistry, preformulation, formulation, process development and validation, scale-up, tech transfer, and manufacturing support.

John Elter is a senior sales engineer with more than 25 years of experience at Micromeritics working with materials characterization instrumentation. He currently supports customers in both the mid-Atlantic and New England regions for sales, applications support, and instrument training.

This short course is a comprehensive introduction to tablet and capsule manufacturing, and emphasizes hands-on, practical learning through extensive laboratory exercises. It will take students from raw material assessment and formulation development, through operations of a manufacturing unit, to end-product testing and quality control using PAT methods. Lecture material will be further emphasized by comprehensive labs in which the unit operations discussed will include: milling, mixing, granulation, spray drying, compression, encapsulation, and coating. In addition, the course will cover formulation strategies and offer a detailed discussion about the major excipient classes. It is designed for industrial researchers who work in formulation development, process development, quality control, and administration. The short course is also ideal for FDA regulators who work in CMC review, as well as FDA labs involved in product quality evaluation.
