American ingredient solutions provider Ingredion recently signed an exclusive commercial agreement to distribute and market Northern Quinoa Production Corporation (NorQuin) quinoa flours globally, the company announced in a release Wednesday.

The company said it entered into the agreement with Canada-based NorQuin in response to increased consumer demand for plant-based proteins.

“Quinoa is a grain, which has nutritional value that is complementary to pulses, such as peas and lentils. NorQuin has invested more than two decades of research to develop proprietary and high-yielding quinoa,” Tony DeLio, chief innovation officer and senior vice president, corporate strategy for Ingredion, said in a statement. “Working with NorQuin, we have the opportunity to further innovate and commercialize novel quinoa-based protein offerings for food manufacturers.”

Beyond the distribution and marketing of the quinoa flours, the agreement also gives Ingredion the ability to invest equity in NorQuin in the coming years.

“We aim to make quinoa more accessible so we can improve human health and the resource efficiency of the foods that we eat. Our new partnership with Ingredion will help us do that at scale,” said NorQuin Chief Executive Officer Aaron Jackson in the release. “Ingredion’s global reach, deep-rooted distribution channels and R&D expertise will help accelerate our growth and deliver on our mission.”

The global market for quinoa flour is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.1% between 2019 and 2025 to a value of $320 million, according to a forecast published by Market Research Future. North America is projected to account for the bulk of the global market during the period.
