A contract worker was injured in an explosion and fire at the Georgia Pacific plant in Alcolu, SC on Monday, local news organizations reported.
Crews responded to the facility after the explosion was called in at about 4:30 pm and arrived to find flames in the building’s duct work, Clarendon County Fire Chief Michael A. Johnson said in an interview with The Sumter Item. Firefighters remained on scene for about four hours.
The contractor was carrying out work on ducts when a flash fire, officials told CBS News affiliate WLTX. Emergency personnel transported the person to an area hospital for treatment. An investigation into the incident has been opened, Georgia Pacific officials said in the broadcaster’s coverage.
Georgia Pacific’s plant in Alcolu produces oriented strand board (OSB). The company announced plans in late 2018 to invest $4.5 million in a new 30,000-sq-ft warehouse, a new laminating line, and equipment.
