A large blaze ignited at a Vergennes, VT feed mill last Saturday morning that destroyed the structure, several local news organizations reported.
The fire at the Feed Commodities International mill was fueled by dust present on mixers, conveyor belts, grain bins, processing and mixing machinery and other machinery inside the structure, Vergennes Fire Department Chief Jim Breur told the Addision Independent.
“It’s a feed mill, so it’s all grain dust all through the building. It’s all open. And it’s nothing but tin holding it in there, so you get the heat. The grain dust just blows through there,” Breur said in the newspaper’s coverage.
Fire officials said efforts to battle the fire were hindered by a lack of available water due to a house fire that broke out nearby around the same time, according to a report by CBS News affiliate WCAX.
Two railcars received damages from the fire, the Independentsaid. No injuries were logged during the incident. Reports said the fire is under investigation.
Feed Commodities International manufactures a range of stock formula feeds, calf grain products and milk replacers, mineral supplements, and nutritional products, according to the firm’s website. The company primarily serves the the swine, beef, dairy, poultry and small ruminant markets.
