Firefighters worked into the early hours of Friday morning to douse a fire that started at Cooperative Producers Inc. (CPI) dry fertilizer production plant in Hastings, NE on Thursday night, local news organizations reported. Several workers were injured during the incident.
Emergency personnel were called to the CPI facility after the fire started at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday night and managed to knock down the flames by 4 a.m. on Friday, coverage by the Associated Press said. Firefighters from several nearby towns also made their way to the scene.
Law enforcement officials told ABC News affiliate KHGI that at least one building at the North Showboat Blvd. site was a loss and that four workers were transported to an area hospital to receive treatment for minor burns. While the remains of the fire are expected to smolder for several days, Hastings Police said in the television news station’s report that no toxic fumes were released into the air.
Traffic on roadways near the plant was restricted during the incident. Homes and businesses near the facility were briefly ordered to keep their windows closed and remain indoors.
CPI opened the dry fertilizer plant last August with a capacity of 44,000 tn, according to an account by NBC News station KSNB.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
