A large fire ignited at the Performance Minerals Corp. (PMC) manufacturing site in Ensley, AL Friday that forced residents near the plant to evacuate, local news organizations reported.

Firefighters and HAZMAT personnel from Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident around 11:40 a.m., coverage by 1819News.com said. Upon arrival, crews learned that an unknown chemical was inside the facility.

Homes within a two-block radius of the PMC plant were evacuated, ABC News affiliate WBMA detailed. Around 12 workers also evacuated the facility during the incident. No injuries were recorded.

Residents were allowed to return to their dwellings around 3:40 p.m., said WBMA.

PMC manufactures calcium sulfate based industrial fillers used in composites applications. The firm operates three other production sites in the US.
