Workers were forced to evacuate the Kinder Morgan Point Breeze Terminal in Philadelphia on Monday night after a two-alarm fire broke out, local news organizations reported.
Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel told NBC Philadelphia that the blaze ignited at about 6:45 p.m. in pipes running between storage tanks. Firefighters worked to prevent flames spreading to a tank holding 1.5 million gal of ethanol, the official said.
“Ethanol was released from the impacted tank and is contained at the facility. The facility has been evacuated and all personnel are accounted for, with no injuries,” the company said in a statement to the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Upon discovery, the company shut down the facility and secured the area. Air monitoring is being established around the perimeter of the facility to gauge any impacts.”
Crews were able to bring the blaze under control in about two hours after arrival, the fire department said in a post on its Facebook page. Some personnel stayed at the scene after the fire was out to investigate and offer support.
The Point Breeze Terminal has a total storage capacity of 580,000 bbls, according to information on Kinder Morgan’s website. Eight tanks are used at the 26-acre site to store petroleum, gasoline, ULSD, ethanol, and biodiesel.
