Hopper Damaged in Fire at Cargill Grain Milling Plant

A fire late Tuesday evening at a Cargill grain milling plant in Cedar Rapids, IA damaged a hopper and some soybeans, local news reports said.

Members of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to the Cargill facility at about 10:22 p.m. after receiving a report of a grain dryer fire, the department told the Cedar Rapids Gazette in a statement. After arriving on scene, firefighters found the flames had spread to an external grain hopper.

The fire department used a 100-ft aerial ladder to extinguish the flames from above and then worked with Cargill staff to remove burning soybeans from the hopper.

No injuries were reported during the incident and authorities believe the cause of the blaze was unintentional, Cedar Rapids, IA-based ABC News affiliate KCRG reported.

In October 2017, the Cargill grain mill in Cedar Rapids celebrated its fiftieth year in operation, the Gazette said in an article at the time. The plant currently processes 100,000 bushels of corn/day.
