Crews from several area fire departments responded to a fire at a Fowlerville, MI grain elevator this Memorial Day and ordered residents near the facility to evacuate their homes due to hazardous materials (HazMat) present at the site, several local news organizations reported.
Arriving at the Fowlerville Farm Services elevator at about 2 p.m., firefighters declared a HazMat situation when it was determined the facility had pesticides present. A storage building was destroyed in the fire, along with a cart inside the structure.
“The building is gone, the cart is destroyed…an adjacent grain dryer [was] very heavily damaged, probably destroyed,” Fowlerville Area Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Feig told Lansing, MI-based Fox News affiliate WSYM.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes within an hour and the fire was under control by 3:15 p.m., Fowlerville Fire Chief John Wright said in coverage by the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.
No injuries were reported during the incident. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
