Fire officials said a fork lift explosion was the cause of a 56-year-old worker’s death Thursday morning at the Procter & Gamble (P&G) plant in Pineville, LA.

The man was reportedly operating the equipment at the facility at about 3 a.m. when the incident occurred. Local media identified the victim as Allen Kendrick of Jena, LA.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the P&G Product Supply family passed away at our Alexandria manufacturing facility in a tragic accident during the early morning hours of May 24, 2018,” P&G said in a statement released to local media. “The safety of our employees is a top priority, and there is an investigation underway at this time. We are connected with the employee’s family and have expressed our deepest condolences. We will support them and all our Alexandria employees in this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s office told Acadiana, LA-based ABC News affiliate KATC that the explosion was contained to the forklift and that no fire was reported. Investigators from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) responded to the site following the incident, the television news station reported.

The P&G plant in Pineville manufactures laundry detergent. An investigation into the cause of the accident remains open.

Earlier this month, Powder & Bulk Solids reported that fire crews responded to a machine fire at a P&G paper mill in Green Bay, WI.
