One firefighter was killed and another was injured while combatting a fire and explosion at an Archer Daniels Midland grain facility in Clinton, IA last Saturday morning, local news organizations reported.

Workers on site observed smoldering material in a silo storage bin within the loading facility at about 5:45 a.m. and called firefighters, ADM spokesperson Jackie Anderson told local media. Reports said an explosion occurred after fire crews arrived.

“We greatly appreciate the quick response, bravery, and dedication of all the emergency responders today,” Anderson said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened at the turn of events.”

33-year-old Clinton Fire Department Lt. Eric Hosette died from injuries received during the incident. Another firefighter, 23-year-old Adam Cain, was injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire and explosion are under investigation.
