A fire at the West Liberty Foods meat processing plant in Tremonton, UT last Friday morning caused $1.5 million in damages and left three workers with injuries, local news organizations reported.
Crews from several area fire departments were called to the scene around 5:30 a.m. Tremont Garland Police Chief Kurt Fertig told a Fox News affiliate based in Salt Lake City that the flames were contained to one building outside of the main facility. The structure was reportedly holding thermal fluid at the time of the incident.
Some homes near the facility were evacuated during the incident because of 50,000 lb of ammonia stored under the plant’s cooling system could explode, NBC News affiliate KSL said in coverage. Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from reaching the ammonia. Workers at the plant were also evacuated.
The West Liberty Foods plant sustained about $1.5 million in property damage, according to an estimate published by the Tremonton Leader. Company officials said the building, which housed a boiler, was a complete loss. Three workers received minor injuries during the, the newspaper said.
West Liberty Foods, founded in 1996, processes turkeys. The Tremonton plant opened in 2007, according to information on the company’s website.
