A fire has destroyed several buildings at a fish processing plant in southeastern New Brunswick, Canada.

Fire crews were called to Elphege et Norbert LeBlanc Ltd. in Petit-Cap around 5 a.m. Monday, reported local radio station CKNI 91.9

Yves LeBlanc, deputy chief of the Cap-Acadie Fire Department, said the initial call was for smoke in the area.

“Originally it got upgraded to a garage fire. Once I showed up on scene, I was the first member on scene, it was a large fish processing and smokehouse plant,” LeBlanc told the radio station.

A total of 45 firefighters from five different departments battled the flames for several hours. The fire was in a large building, said the deputy fire chief, and working in the heat was difficult for firefighters.

LeBlanc confirmed that three of the four buildings on site were destroyed in the fire. “One building, it was a smokehouse/warehouse, was able to be saved,” he said.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the province’s fire marshal.

The company employs about 40 people in the area and is a major employer for the region, according to CBC news.

This is the latest of many fires in the area in the last several years, including several at smokehouses and other fish plants, the CBC stated.
