Fire at Chemical Plant in Michigan Causes 5 Injuries

Reports said an explosion and fire destroyed the R.J. Marshall chemical plant in Rockwood, MI on Wednesday and left 5 firefighters with injuries.

A fire at the R.J. Marshall Company chemical plant in Rockwood, MI on Wednesday forced officials to issue a shelter in place order for areas near the facility and left several firefighters with injuries.

Crews were dispatched to the North Huron River Drive facility at about 1:45 pm, a Rockwood Police official said in a Detroit Free Press article.

Several hours after firefighters arrived on scene, Monroe County Emergency Management initiated a shelter in place order for those living within a mile radius of the R.J. Marshall plant, Rockwood Police said in a Facebook post.

Flat Rock Fire Department, one of five fire departments that responded to the incident, tweeted that five firefighters received injuries while combatting the fire. Part of a local roadway was also temporarily closed during the effort to douse the flames.

Fire officials told television news station WXYZ that an explosion occurred in the rear of the facility. R.J. Marshall’s plant was destroyed in the fire, according to the ABC News affiliate.

R.J. Marshall supplies the thermoset and thermoplastics industries with solid surface, cast polymer products and flame retardant solutions.
