Firefighters from several municipalities responded to a blaze last Monday at the Kingsbury Elevator Inc. grain elevator in La Porte County, IN, according to coverage by local television news station WSBT.

La Porte County Hazmat Director Jeff Hamilton told WSBT that canola ignited in the top of a structure next to a silo. The official said smoke was generated by smoldering grain in the building.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but Hamilton said in the report that it may have been started by a spark in machinery or spontaneous combustion from heat buildup.

Kingsbury Elevator Inc. announced plans in 2017 to invest $3.45 million in an expansion of the La Porte County facility, an article by the La Porte County Herald-Argus said. The company’s plans called for the addition of 8000 ft of rail track, new conveying systems, and additional office space.
