Two people were injured and about 100 area residents were evacuated after an explosion at a grain elevator in South Sioux City, IA owned by Anderson Farms Inc. on Tuesday.
“At approximately 1 p.m. a privately-owned elevator experienced an explosion in the upper reaches of the tallest portion of the structure. Three individuals were working at the time, one of which was injured with burns to the upper portion of his body,” the South Sioux City Police Department said in a press release posted to its Facebook page.
Another worker received minor injuries and one remained unscathed, South Sioux City Police Department Chief Ed Mahon told the Sioux City Journal. Firefighters from more than five municipalities responded to the scene.
A witness who was working two blocks south of the elevator when the incident occurred told the Journal that he heard multiple explosions coming from the site.
“The first explosion came out of the top piece [of the structure],” Judd Jager said in the newspaper’s report. “The second came about a couple seconds later. That was big. That’s what took the walls out.”
Citing concerns over the safety of the damaged elevator’s structure, officials evacuated about 100 residents living near the Anderson Farms site. The South Sioux City Council declared a state of emergency on Tuesday evening.
State and local investigators are working to determine the cause of the blast.
