An explosion and fire last Thursday at the ABB production plant in Bland, VA left two workers with injuries, local news organizations reported.

Fire crews from several municipalities responded to the site after reports of the blast came in at about 2:30 p.m., Bland County Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Dunn told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph

“One of their ovens they bake the varnish on the transformers in, the door blew off,” Dunn said in the newspaper article. “It was actually an explosion, and what was in it caught on fire.”

The fire official said in coverage by news website SWVAToday.com that firefighters doused the flames with foam and water and remained on scene until about 7 p.m. Damages were limited to the area containing the industrial oven.

“They’ll have to do an investigation. It [the oven] had numerous safeguards that are supposed to keep [it] from overheating and overpressure,” Dunn said in the Daily Telegraph

One worker received minor injuries during the incident and another was transported to an area burn unit for treatment.

The cause of the blast is unknown.
