Evacuations Ordered During Silo Fire at Feed Mill
February 12, 2020
A fire broke out in a grain silo at the Sanderson Farms feed mill in Adel, GA on Sunday, causing officials to call for a voluntary evacuation for those within one mile of the plant, local news organizations reported.
Emergency personnel were notified of the incident at about 8 a.m., Cook County Emergency Management Director Johnny West told reporters. The bin reportedly contained soybean meal when the fire started. West said the voluntary evacuation order was issued as a precaution because of the risk of an explosion.
A specialty team hired by Sanderson Farms responded to the site to provide an assessment of the situation, a post on the Cook County EMA page on Facebook said. The evacuation was lifted by early evening Sunday.
The City of Adel Fire Department, Adel Police Department the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia DOT and other agencies provided assistance during the fire.
In addition to the feed mill, Sanderson Farms also operates a hatchery in Adel, according to the firm’s website.
