Dryer Fire at Iowa Plant Causes At Least $2M in Damage

A dust-fueled dryer fire broke out an an Iowa egg processing plant on Monday, resulting in an estimated $3 million in damage.

A fire ignited in a piece of drying equipment at the Iowa Drying and Processing plant in Sibley, IA on Monday night, causing an estimated $2 million to $3 million in damage, several local news organizations reported.

Three area fire departments were dispatched to the facility at about 8 pm, according to news broadcaster KMRR. Upon arrival, firefighters found an egg yolk dryer ablaze in the facility.

Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls told news radio station KIWA that a buildup of egg yolk dust in the bottom of the drying bin caught on fire during the incident. Flames a cloth suction tube used to collect the dried powder on the dryer, spreading the fire to vents and the plant’s roof.

Crews managed to douse the fire in about three hours, coverage by news website ExploreOkoboji.com said.

Iowa Drying and Processing is a contract manufacturer and processor of food and feed grade products, according to the firm’s website. The site has spray drying, evaporation, bagging and packaging, dry blending, liquid blending, and warehousing capabilities.
