Crews Respond to Possible Explosion at PPG Plant

Fire crews responded to the PPG Paints, Coatings, and Materials plant in Greensboro, NC in the early hours of Thursday after reports were received of an possible explosion at the site, television news station WFMY reported. 

Called to the scene at about 3 am, firefighters arrived at the facility to find smoke in the structure, according to WFMY. Officials determined that a mechanical failure caused a loud boom in the facility. 

No injuries occurred during the incident, the broadcaster said. WFMY's report said the facility produces powder coatings that are used in the auto sector. 

PPG’s Greensboro plant was opened in 1965 to produce glass and the firm added production capabilities for coatings in 1996, according to information on the company’s website. The site currently has a headcount of 99 workers.
