Firefighters worked to put out a blaze at a 3M Company medical equipment production plant in Brookings, SD for several hours on Monday evening, several local news organizations reported.

Called to the 22nd Avenue site at about 10:50 p.m., fire personnel arrived at the scene and determined that the flames were contained to a piece of equipment.

“A fire occurred in the Coating department and was isolated to a portion of one machine,” Brookings Fire Chief Darrell Hartmann told the Brookings Register. “The fire was extinguished utilizing plant fire suppression systems and through the efforts of the 3M emergency response team.”

The official said local fire crews worked to douse several fires inspected the plant to make sure the flames did not extend to other areas in the facility.

Although the plant was briefly evacuated, no injuries were logged during the incident and structure sustained only minor damages, Chief Hartmann said in coverage by BrookingsRadio.com. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

3M’s Brookings plant manufactures complex medical dressings, medical tapes, surgical drapes, biological indicators, and food safety products, according to information on the company’s website. The site is the largest Health Care manufacturing facility operated by 3M and has a headcount of about 1000 workers.
